Writing Clear and Concise Prose

<2>The Art of Being Concise

Here's a writing truth that took me years to learn: less is often more. Cutting unnecessary words doesn't make your writing shorter - it makes it stronger.

When you edit, look for words that don't add meaning. "Very," "really," "basically" - these often sneak in and weaken your message. Remove them and watch your writing become more powerful.

Kill Your Darlings

Writers get attached to certain phrases. We spend time crafting the perfect sentence, and then we have to cut it. Here's the secret: if it doesn't serve the reader, it has to go.

Every word should earn its place on the page. If you can say something in five words instead of ten, do it. Your readers will appreciate the clarity.

Active Voice vs Passive Voice

Active voice makes your writing lively and direct. "The cat chased the mouse" is active. "The mouse was chased by the cat" is passive. Active is almost always better.

Go through your writing and look for "was," "were," "been," "being." These often signal passive voice. Challenge yourself to rewrite those sentences actively.
